Introduction
This portfolio is a comprehensive compilation of my professional, academic, and volunteer experiences from August 2022 to July 2024 during my journey through the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program at Troy University. It showcases the skills, competencies, and knowledge I have developed, reflecting the integration of theoretical concepts with practical applications in public administration. The artifacts in this portfolio span from the commencement of my MPA program to the present, covering several years of diverse experiences and significant professional development.
I have over 11 years of experience in business development consultancy and community engagement. My roles have included Director of the Small Business Development Center at Troy University and Small Business Consultant at Bolivar Consulting. These positions have allowed me to lead initiatives that promote small business growth, develop strategic partnerships, and manage several funded programs. My volunteer work includes serving as a board member and Development Committee Chair at Turning Point of Lehigh Valley, Board Member of Troy Rotary Club, and participating in the Quality Control Committee of Pike County Department of Human Resources. These roles have enhanced my understanding of community needs and public policy implementation.
The core courses of the MPA program, such as Research Methods, Organizational Behavior, Public Policy, Human Resource Management, Financial Administration, and Ethics, have been instrumental in shaping my professional perspective and competencies. This portfolio balances professional work, volunteer activities, and academic coursework, demonstrating a well-rounded understanding of public administration principles and their application in various contexts.
I am currently employed as the Director of the Small Business Development Center at Troy University, where I apply the skills and knowledge acquired through completing the MPA program to enhance organizational effectiveness and public service delivery. For instance, after taking the grant writing course, I presented a proposal to present at the National SBDC Conference in Atlanta about grant writing and securing additional funding for SBDCs across the country, which was accepted. This achievement not only highlights my proficiency in grant writing but also my ability to contribute to the broader SBDC network. Additionally, I have been invited to join committees such as my local Alabama Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils, further demonstrating the impact of my work on the community.
My short-term goal is to continue developing supplemental projects that connect the University with the community, fostering meaningful relationships between both parties. A primary objective is establishing the Institute for Economic Empowerment under the Sorrell College of Business. This institute will create a replicable and scalable model using entrepreneurship as a practical means for economic mobility.
In the long term, I aspire to ascend to a significant leadership position at the state level, such as Secretary of Commerce. The MPA program has equipped me with essential skills, such as policy analysis, strategic planning, and financial management, which are crucial for this role. The program has provided me with a robust understanding of governance and economic development, which I plan to leverage to influence economic policy and development. In this role, I aim to ensure that public resources are used efficiently and equitably to foster sustainable growth and community well-being.
By integrating the theoretical knowledge and practical skills gained through the MPA program, I am well-prepared to drive policy changes, advocate for equitable economic practices, and lead initiatives that promote economic development at a state level.
